Ottawa’s JASON ‘THRUST’ MCNEELY is your 2015 Canadian Air Guitar Champion!
He’s a real lightning bug. He’s also from Japan… sort of. Sandy ‘Freakachu’ Gibson is your Air Guitar Ottawa host and entertainer at the House of Targ on May 9th. Ottawa can thank Sandy for lining up this event. The man pretty much put the whole damn thing together with his electrifying personality and polite demeanour. He loves helping friends, he’s kind to animals, and he can really twang an invisible guitar.
if you didn’t register by Midnight on May 8th for Ottawa… come on out and be part of the Brave Souls round. It’s like Air Guitar Karaoke. You never know… we might have your favourite song. Last year’s Canadian Champ was a ‘Brave Soul’ don’t you know.
Here’s a video of our man Freakachu from his introduction last year:
Every so often you get really excited about a night out. Drinking, hooting, hollering, dance on tables, hit on cuties, puke on shoes excited. This Saturday May 9th at the House of Targ is going to be one of those nights (minus the puking, maybe no tables). The first, ‘the inaugural’, the genesis of what we hope will be many years of Air Guitar Ottawa Championships is all cued up and ready to roll.
You have 36 hours left to register. As of Friday at Midnight – the on-line registration ends. DO IT NOW
Join us for a night of insanity and face-melting performances from Air Guitarists with names like: Parts Unknown, Buck Naked, and the Doughy Cobra. With handles like that, you know you’re in for something ‘special’. The fun starts at 9pm. We’ll be spinning tunes and getting primed for the first of two performance rounds. All of our registered performers will dazzle the judges with their 1-min acts receiving scores ranging from 4.0 – 6.0 – the figure skating scoring system. Of course. Performances are judged on:
- the Ability to be Taken Over by the Music;
- Stage Charisma;
- Artistic Impression; and
So maybe you are there but you never registered, and you are so freaking inspired after watching the performers that you HAVE TO DO IT. We’ve also got the BRAVE SOULS ROUND where we have over 20 pre-cut rock/alt/metal classics for you to pick from and be part of the competition. It’s like Air Guitar Karaoke.
The top performers from both those rounds go to the final round called the COMPULSORY ROUND. This is the round where the audience has voted via ballot for which song will be performed by each and all of the finalists. The audience can decide if they want to boost the value of the ballot with any small change as a direct donation to our charity Right To Play. So if your friend who is performing wants a certain song… throw down some ducats to ensure they get the song they love in the compulsory round. The trick is that everyone does the same song but whomever scored the lowest in the Performance or Brave Souls rounds goes first! And finally – The title of Ottawa’s first ever Air Guitar Champion goes to who has the best combined score from their first performance and the compulsory performance.
Ottawa’s own SUNS OF STONE will keep us raging into the early morning, the Steam Whistle will be flowing, the pinballs will be bumping, the perogies will be steaming, and the world will be alright, even if just for that moment in time.
Looking forward to celebrating with you Ottawa!
“To err is human… to Air Guitar is divine! “- Bjorn Turoque
Ottawa’s House of Targ to host the inaugural Air Guitar Ottawa Championships!
May 9th, 2015 will go down in history and infamy as the day Canada’s capital city hosts their first ever ‘official’ Air Guitar Championships. It makes perfect sense that The House of Targ, Ottawa’s most kick-ass eatery and music venue should bring the freak-show party of Air Guitar to the citizens of Bytown. Ottawa rockers, SUNS of STONE, will headline this night of pure spectacul-Air rock-awesomeness.
So Ottawa… bring us your metal heads, your bangers, your punks and your rockers. We want your comedians, your performers, your goofs and your clowns. We want your lovers of music, purveyors of good times, champions of world peace and bringers of joy. We want all the fans and friends to cheer like leaders and holler like Stefanis. We want Ottawa to rock so hard every pinball game gives out extra balls and Mike Duffy gets another cheque from Nigel Wright, just because.
So you’re intrigued? Good. You should enter to compete. Prepare a 1-min performance of your choice. Air Guitar like a demon. Get ‘judged’ by celebrity judges using the figure skating scoring system of 4.0 – 6.0. Make it to the second round. Improvise your Air Guitar to a song chosen by the audience. Win. You’re now Ottawa’s first-ever Air Guitar Champion. Go to Toronto. Win. Now your the Canadian Champ. Fly to Oulu, Finland for the 20th Air Guitar World Championships. Win that too? There’s a story for the grandkids.
The saying goes: “When you are holding an Air Guitar, you can’t be holding a gun”
We do this for World Peace and specifically to benefit the kids who get support and programmes from the people at Right To Play Canada who help children facing adversity due to war, poverty, famine and disease. We made $2500 for the charity last year and hope that Ottawa can help us raise some more.
Admit it, you want to. Be a volunt-AIR of the most rocking proportions. Go all the way and we send you, our national champion to Oulu, Finland for the Air Guitar World Championships. Flight and Hotel paid. You get the experience of a lifetime to participate in 20th year of Air Guitar. Here’s the promo video from last year’s competition:
