THE 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY – A LIVING PIECE OF AIR GUITAR HISTORY
Post and Video By Tyler ‘Cat Friday’ Gardner – Air Guitar Alberta Commissioner
Conceived from pure ‘rock n’ roll mayhem’ and then forged from fire – this year’s Air Guitar Canada trophy is a symbol of pure, unfiltered Airness. 2015’s Canadian National Championships saw one of the absolute craziest moments in Air Guitar history since Johnny Utah smashed a beer bottle over his head in ’07. Jason “Thrust” McNeely started his performance by outright destroying his real guitar and resurrecting it’s spirit in the form of his Air Guitar! He went on to win the night and flew to Finland to represent Canada on the World stage! After the show I scavenged the stage and recovered as much of the splintered wreckage that used contain the spirit of Thrusts Air Guitar and brought it back with me to Alberta. I decided to incorporate the pieces into the trophy for Nationals the following year.
The body of the trophy is the same trophy I build for Nationals every year: a plasma cut steel wall-mounted guitar hanger crafted into the logo of Air Guitar Canada. The hanger is meant to hang the trophy from the World Championships which is a real clear bodied electric guitar. If you win both the Nationals and the Worlds they become a set. The Air Guitarist jumping in the logo is cut out of the wooden body of Thrusts Guitar. Other parts coming from Thrust’s guitar are the neck, head stoke, bridge, and strings. It’s basically a working guitar that is also a guitar hanger!
Who ever wins the Nationals July 16th at the Mod Club in Toronto will also take home this baby and be off to Finland! If Thrust wants to see his old guitar again he is going to have to bring his ‘A’ game and defend his title, because the competition will be stiffer then ever!
RED DEER TO THE RESCUE – First-Ever Championships Delivers the Goods
Event Re-Cap By: Tyler Gardner
Photos & Video by: Stephanie Kartzmark
June 18th, 2016 – Have you ever been somewhere and you could sense that something amazing was about to happen? Maybe it was the energy, the vibe, the tension, but you just knew you were in the right place for that moment that would undoubtedly go down in history. That is how I felt as I strolled into Fratters Speakeasy that night in Red Deer, Alberta.
Fratters, already a place rich with its history of music and performance was filling up with a new injection of electricity, accumulating in the air. As is always the case with such phenomena, it would inevitably find a way to discharge and unleash its full power all at once, and it did… all over the stage. Fratters is easily one of the classiest joints in town and by far the classiest place an Air Guitar Competition has ever been hosted at, or at least it was before we rolled in. This is the kind of place where a weirdo can be weird and a person can be themselves without being afraid of what others think (perfect for air guitar right?), and for one high flying, sock rocking night it was home… because as we all know, home is where you hang your Air Guitar.
It turns out that Red Deer was not to be the exception to the unstoppable wave of female Air Guitarists that have been sweeping Canada – proving without any doubt that Air Guitar is not just for the boys. Kaje Annihilatrix AKA: Sista’ Fista’ shredded through the night like a twista and made history as Red Deer’s first-ever ‘official’ Air Guitar Champion. When she hit the stage you immediately knew things were going to get crazy. While there were challengers and the scores were tight, once the dust had settled she remained standing tall… the Red Deer Champion.
Drawing first assignment was LT. Windhammer. Combining the names of two veteran US Air Guitarists LT. Facemelter and Windhammer. LT Windhammer defined what it means to be a Brave Soul; Having never even heard of competitive Air Guitar before this night he pulled out a pretty decent “Kickstart My Heart”.
5.1 – 5.0 – 5.3 – 5.1 – 5.2
Next up Maritime Sweetness showed us how sweet he really is, easily winning the award for best head banging of the night. He was head banging to “Shallow Grave” by Annihilator so hard he almost ended up in the drum kit!
5.8 – 5.2 – 5.6 – 5.5 – 5.5
Our only returning competitor from last year Hand Solo hit the stage next dressed in an Adam West style Batman suit… which makes sense. Walking out onto some vacant tables the Dark Night melted faces with his over the top performance with “Enter the Hall” by Revocation. He also impressed judges with the first Power Slide of the night!
5.8 – 5.7 – 5.5 – 5.9 – 5.8
Goldwin Massacre was next living up to his name as he laid waste to the stage showing exactly how its done! At one point he rode his Air Guitar like a skate board in tribute to the fact that the venue used to be an indoor skate park! He shredded to DRI’s “I Don’t Need Society” harder then it’s ever been shredded.. which is saying something if you know DRI. Rock N Roll is alive and well…. Gene!
5.3 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.9 – 5.7
Keeping things old school was The Black Heart! Who, dressed in all black rocked out barefoot to Joan Jett’s classic anthem “I Love Rock N Roll” earning herself the night’s first 6.0
5.9 – 6.0 – 5.6 – 5.1 – 5.3
Then out of nowhere last minute entry Zorba hit the stage looking like a being from a far away Galaxy of Rock and Metal. What followed was an Air Guitar clinic as he bounded through a medley of tracks including Journey – “Separate Ways”,
Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock”.
5.8 – 6.0 – 5.9 – 5.8 – 5.9
Sista’ Fista’ was next to try her shot at the invisible axe. As a Brave Soul she was going into this having never heard the edit of the song she chose, just picked from a list and killed it!! Thats what Air Guitar is all about! She also had some of the best Rock faces of the night! Her effort earned her the highest individual score of the night with nearly a perfect score!
5.9 – 5.8 – 6.0 – 6.0 – 6.0
Closing out the night was Jordy Bryce who rocked out to arguably one of the best Air Guitar Songs out there, “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath. And Jordy did not disappoint!
5.0 – 5.4 – 5.5 – 5.8 – 5.5
During half time organizer, national medalist, all around good guy Tyler “Cat Friday” Gardner (also the writer of this recap) gave the competitors a taste of what Nationals will be like. An official welcoming to the Air Guitar Canada family; theres nothing like a little family rivalry.
In the Compulsory round competitors had to Air Guitar to a mystery song unbeknownst to them. The audience voted through secret ballots and overwhelmingly chose a Heavy Metal Cover of “Gangnam Style”. After hearing the song once the top five from the first round, one by one performed the song. They went in reverse order based off of their previous scores.
5.6 – 5.6 – 5.5 – 5.8 – 5.6
The Black Heart
5.3 – 5.8 – 5.8 – 5.7 – 5.4
5.5 – 5.8 – 5.8 – 5.7 – 5.3
5.8 – 5.8 – 5.7 – 5.8 – 6.0
5.8 – 6.0 – 5.9 – 5.8 – 5.8
In the end after a hard fought night of battling Air Guitars only one can stand champion, that champion is Kaje Annihilatrix, or as she will be known hence fourth… Sista’ Fista’.
After wrapping things up with the traditional mass playing of “Keep on Rocking in the Free World” by Neil Young, Diesel May closed out the night. I couldn’t possibly think of a better way to conclude a night of Rock then with more Rock. No one does it better, or Rocks harder than Diesel May.
Congratulations to all of the competitors for making history at the first ever Red Deer Air Guitar Championships. Huge thank you to Fratters Speakeasy for being the coolest bar with the best staff in town. A thanks as well to our sponsors at Steam Whistle, 106.7 The Drive, Pango pizza, and Banger Bingo!!
See you in Toronto!

Penetanguishene Power Slides Into Their First Air Guitar Championships With Huge Community Support
They say it takes a village. A village to raise a child… sure. But this village is raising the up the idiot in the name of world peace and helping a great charity called RIGHT TO PLAY.
Air Guitar is about bringing smiles to people’s faces as courageous participants melt faces by doing their best Mr. Bean after cranking down a six-pack of Steam Whistle. It’s the regular-joe’s chance to be a rock star without ever having the talent to..well..be a rock star.
WHAT YOU WAITING FOR? ENTER
I GOTTA SEE THIS! BUY TICKETS
The village, nay the County, of Simcoe which includes Penetanguishene and Midland among others is making a name for itself by joining the ranks of the weird and wonderful with their first charity Air Guitar Championships. The winner travels to Toronto on July 16th for the Canadian Championships. And maybe, just maybe, they win and get the experience of a lifetime flying to Oulu, Finland (look it up) to participate in the 21st Air Guitar World Championships.
Joining the ranks of people from this amazing community who are making the goodness happen – we have a Ward Councillor, a Deputy Mayor, and a Butter Tart Festival Boss. Pretty much the most powerful people in Simcoe County. They have united for a historic moment – here are their bios:
JUDGE #1 Mike Ross – Deputy Mayor for the Town of Midland. Married and father of two. Born and Raised Midland boy and Proud of it. Classic Rock & Metal Fan. Been playing Air Guitar for over 40 years. Performed my self taught style to the Rolling Stones, Green Day, Rush & Neil Young to name just a few.
JUDGE #2 Barb Rowlandson
Born from a cloud of smoke machine fog lit by a Pink Floyd laser show, Barb Rowlandson is an acolyte of the Goddess Rock n’ Roll. Barb’s career has had many wacky incarnations, but she is best known locally as the creator of Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival. These days, you’ll find Barb rockin’ out classic style at Askennonia Senior Centre, where she is currently organising Midland’s next great festival, Zucchini Mania. In her spare time, Barb plays the actual guitar, volunteers for Huronia Museum, paints, screen prints, hula hoops and obsessively watches Henry Rollins videos on the YouTube.
Rollins… man. That’s boss.
And finally – our super host Cody Oschefski
An eager and passionate member of the Unifor skilled trades council, an 11 year employee at TRW automotive as an electrician after serving an apprenticeship. The vice president and skilled trades rep at Unifor Local 1411. A councillor in the Town of Midland with aspirations of being Deputy Mayor in 2018. Created and chairs the Midland Youth committee. On the board of directors at the Boys and Girls club of North Simcoe and an advocate for underprivileged youth, young people in the trades and creating opportunities for people in general. Known for ability to listen, being a lifetime learner and always giving back and serving his community.
We have more love to share with the people who are making this happen – but we’ll post about them tomorrow. 2 more judges and a whole bunch of businesses that have gotten behind the event.
See you this Saturday at The Maple Valley Sports Bar at 8pm. We’ll have some cold Steam Whistle ready for you along with a night you won’t soon forget.
Banger Bingo has been with us since our re-birth in 2014. We found each other on the internet. It started as a conversation about each other’s gigs. As you know, we put on Air Guitar competitions for charity. Banger Bingo puts on rock and roll bingo parties for a living. Because they dig us (feeling is mutual) and out of the goodness of their own hearts they flew themselves out to Toronto to perform for our first National Championships and their amazing support and generosity just keeps on flowing.
They’ve entertained Air Guitar Canada audiences in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Saskatoon and coming up this weekend – Red Deer Alberta for the first-ever ‘official’ Air Guitar Championships. It is now the third season that they have lent a hand to helping us bring some joy, make some money for charity and send a winner to Finland for the World Championships.
They put on a great show. It’s like bingo with Gene Simmons or Vince Neil circa 1987 as the host. There are prizes, costumes, inflatable guitars, good times had by all.
So head over to Fratters Saturday night for 106.7 The Drive’s Air Guitar Red Deer Championships and kick off your weekend right. Banger Bingo will get you warmed up at 8pm, and then the Air Guitar will follow shortly after.
Last chance to buy advanced tickets.

DANA-SAURUS REX WINS TORONTO CHAMPIONSHIP – WEDDINGS SUCK.
Yes… we’ve been really busy. We had the Toronto Championships on May 28th. Montreal was on June 3rd. Ottawa on June 4th. And now…here we are on June 7th… just three sleeps from the first-ever Air Guitar Medicine Hat on June 11th. It’s Bananas! By the way… so far each and every Canadian regional championship has been won by women. Rock and Roll is for the dames!
Here is the long-awaited Toronto re-cap with pictures, some video, and plenty of goodness. Huge thanks to our resident photographer of all things Air Guitar – Henry Vanderspeck a.k.a. Culture Snap. Another huge shout out to SteamWhistle Pilsner for being our biggest and baddest sponsor. Thanks to Panago Pizza for fuelling our shredding and face melting. Our prize sponsors: Bestival, Eatertainment, Second City, Sincair Music and Hog Town Pub and Oysters. And a giant thank you to our new venue the Drake Underground. We made over a grand for our charity Right To Play… that’s pretty boss. Here’s the goodness:
Dana ‘Dana-Saurus Rex’ Schiemann entered as a Brave Soul and came out on top of the competition in Toronto. Her freaking crazy hair and larger than life stage presence floated her into the top spot (see video). Sadly for us… she’s got a wedding to attend on July 16th. Hooray for us… the top spot for Toronto at Nationals will go to vice-champion Blake ‘Canadian Tuxedo’ Johnston, a newcomer who regurgitated a killer interpretation of Pantera’s Cowboy’s from Hell (see video):
The night started off with a special guest performance by Dance Animal. They are a comedic dance troupe that will be performing at Fringe late this month. Check them out – top Fringe act – without a doubt.
After Dance Animal warmed up the crowd… our super host Matty Burns led an air band number of The Black Crowes – Hard To Handle. Real singing by Matty and fake instruments by Carlos ‘Hanzel the Manzel’ Mengual – the 2015 Toronto Air Guitar Champ, The Storm Troop-Air, and Paul ‘The PK’ Kingston.
We met our judges: From left to right – Kat Curtis from Naked News, Luke Cameron from the Edge 102.1, Suresh John from CBC’s Mr. D, Carlos ‘Hanzel the Manzel’ Mengual, and Robin Henderson from Dance Animal and Toronto’s Lip Schtick Lip-Synch battles.
It was time for the competition to begin. First up was an unknown called White Face. Needless to say the judges missed the facial expressions and while the choice of Clutch and Shogun Named Marcus harkened us back 20 years, nostalgia was not nearly enough. He received 5.3, 5.4, 5.6, 5.0, 5.2.
2nd to grace the stage was Carlos Los Badass. A newcomer to the Toronto Air Guitar scene, Carlos totally killed it. He brought the latin lov-air to life with the Gypsy Kings ‘Bambaleo’. Carlos has qualified for Nationals. Scores: 5.5, 5.6, 5.6, 5.8, 5.8.
Next up was another newcomer Tyler ‘Secks A. Peel’ Forbes. Driving hard and leaping high to The Darkness’ ‘I Believe In a Thing Called Love’. Tyler didn’t move forward to the next round… but by our eyes he was most definitely deserving. Secks A. Peel is committed to redemption and has signed up as a Dark Horse for Nationals on July 16th. Scores: 5.5, 5.3, 5.2, 5.9, 5.7.
And another newcomer Laurence ‘Maxim’ Tetrault bent it like Victoria Beckham and gave a solid performance of Joan Jett’s ‘I Love Rock and Roll’. By no means the least of the performers her scores were near the lower end of the spectrum earning her the 2 Free Music Lessons from Sinclair Music. Funny enough…she’s chosen to use them for the piano. We hope she’ll come back in July and rock some more for the good cause… that and she’s totally rad. Scores: 5.3, 5.3, 5.4, 5.0, 5.2.
Then we had Whiskey Buttocks. Ooops. We mean Whiskey Pockets. Yep… Mark Slater was back for his second year in Air Guitar. Not only did he take it up to a whole new level qualifying for the compulsory round, but he’s been a gent sharing his graphic design skills to get the good word out to the masses by crafting each of our posters and on-line pieces that you may have seen. We are thrilled he’ll be moving forward to Nationals in the championship round. 5.6, 5.6, 5.8, 5.6, 5.7.
AH… Mr. Bob… our 72 year old competitor who inspires each and everyone of us. Despite his energetic performance, he was just one spot away from qualifying for the Nationals. Bob has entered as a Dark Horse for July 16th in hopes of making his dreams of becoming Canada’s Air Guitar Champion in 2016. Scores: 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.5, 5.8.
Riley ‘Savage Buster’ Boyd channeled his best Dan Akroyd and left a trail of Ectoplasm for the audience to slip around in. Scores: 5.1, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.6
KIt ‘Kid Vicious’ Kolbegger in their third year in Air Guitar was transformed and demonstrated peak ‘airiness’. Kid will move on to the Nationals. Scores: 5.4, 5.7, 5.5, 5.8, 5.8.
Matthew ‘Champ Forrester’ Hallsworth used his mental telekinetic powers to play the Air Guitar. This my friends, was a first. It was both innovative and bold. That’s what they say about the Champ. Scores: 5.5, 5.6, 5.4, 5.6, 5.7
The Brave Souls came next. First up was Sandy ‘Freakachu’ Gibson. A veteran of the scene, this pokemon power ball just wanted to play… so he signed up. And did better than he’s ever done in his previous competitions. He finished third… but will be volunteering at Camp Ooch during the Nationals – so we’ll miss seeing him electrify the stage in July. But he’ll be back. Pokeball and all. Scores: 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 ,5.7 ,5.7.
Then there was this guy. Out of nowhere… Pierce Manly. Not only did this guy kill it with his frenetic rocking’, but we even fucked up and played the wrong song and he still went with it like it was the plan all along. I actually wonder what it would have been like if we’d played the song he did know… because he was that good. Minus a trip off the stage because of the dark shades he was wearing – he was freaking amazing. Scores: 5.3, 5.3, 5.2, 5.5, 5.6.
Our videographer got so carrie away watching it all through the lens that he decided he should get up and try it on for size. He turned out to be really good at it and has qualified for Nationals. He called himself Adam ‘Holy Rod’ Holroyd. Scores: 5.6, 5.7, 5.7, 5.4, 5.8.
Then came Dana ‘Dana-Saurus Rex’ Schiemann. She was that and all the more. Her hair and her moves mesmerized every living thing in the room. We all air-gasmed with her to ACDC Shook Me All Night Long…Scores: 5.6, 5.8, 5.8. 5.7. 6.0.
Our final performer had a special night, or what sounded like a special week celebrating his bachelor party. Eduardo Van Halen was well suited and kicked out the jams as any totally hammered stag party might call for. Scores: 5.4, 5.5, 5.5, 5.6, 5.6
Holy Rod – Tied for 3rd.

AIR GUITAR EVERYWHERE THIS WEEKEND – at least in Eastern Canada.
Like the collision of two stars in the cosmos, both Montreal and Ottawa will be creating universal joy and goodness this weekend. These cosmic events are Air Guitar Montreal – June 3rd at Le Divan Orange and Air Guitar Ottawa – June 4th at The House of Targ.
Montreal – Helene ‘HEY!len’ Laurin will defend her provincial title against a dozen of hopefuls who seek to represent La Belle Province at the 2016 Canadian Air Guitar Championships in Toronto on July 16th.
Last year was a she-rocker jamboree in Montreal and so far the two finalists from Saskatoon and Toronto have both been female. What will Montreal give us this year?
Our great friend and local FRINGE organizer Amy Blackmore (Quebec Champ 2008) has brought Air Guitar back to Montreal for its 2nd year. It’s moved to a sweet Indie venue called Le DIVAN ORANGE. They’ve recruited a expert panel of judges that include Jamie O’Meara from the Gazette, Esteban Vargas from CHOM 97.7, and publicist Talar Adam.
Live music vagabond, hamburger eater, producer of CHOM 97.7 FM’s Morning Show.
Montreal will be donating the net proceeds of the event to RIGHT TO PLAY.
So be sure to go and check out the event that may just save your life.
OTTAWA – HOUSE OF TARG – June 4th – Jason ‘Thrust’ McNeely will be foregoing the competition in place of judging his eventual competitor for the Nationals on July 16th in Toronto. Yes. Jason will automatically be defending his Canadian Champions title but first he must pick his Ottawa Champion successor.
Who will walk away with the 2016 Ottawa Air Guitar Championship title? We have a nice crop of competitors ready to entertain you.
Also back for some more late night devil horns, SUNS OF STONE will be keeping us flying into the wee-hours with their latest tracks fresh from the studio. We can’t wait to hear the new material and we hope you will stick around with us late into the night to cheer them on.
More to come about Ottawa – all the judges and all the updates on Montreal prior to Ottawa’s big night.
Third year is the charm – Drake Underground to host extreme music appreciation night.
This is the 3rd year of the newly minted Air Guitar Toronto Championships. We’ve got a new venue with the Drake, a bevy of new performers, and few new saucy judges to help us pick a champion. We are going to rock out and raise some coin for Right To Play.
Yes. May 28th, Saturday Night, in ye olde towne of York… we will be crowning the 2016 Toronto Air Guitar Champion. The winner, along with some top finalists will qualify for the National Championships in July, for their chance to become the 2016 Canadian Champion of AIr Guitar. Yep, that’s a thing.
Grab your tickets at the door. Maybe even try your hand at Air Guitar in our Brave Souls Round – the Karaoke of Air Guitar.
Fun starts at 8:30pm with a special preview of Robin Henderson’s Dance Animal – the surefire hit of the Fringe Festival coming this July.
The competition starts shortly after with Comedian Matty Burns holding the mic and conducting thangs. He’s also directing a wicked funny show called The Clueless Dead coming up next weekend.
Now on to the bragging – we have the best judges. They are so sexy… literally and figuratively.
Kat Curtis from Naked News
Kat loves to dress up or down and then be totally wicked hilarious. This smarty is tall, sparkly and all ‘that’. Check her out on Naked News as the Naked Nerd
Katherine Curtis joined Naked News in 2008, and has been slowly working towards her goal of total world domination ever since. Aimed with an abrasive sense of humor, a razor-sharp wit, a vast knowledge of geek culture, and an impressive set of knockers, she has been steadily gaining hordes of loyal minions and laying waste to everyone who dares stand in her way. Her weaknesses are vegan food, comic books, RPGs, Joss Whedon, The Guild, Neil Gaiman, costume sales, Star Wars, Jonathan Coulton, and Kirby Krackle.
We introduced him last year as the Corey Heart of Air Guitar judges because the man rarely removes his impressive aviators. We are so thrilled to have him back – Suresh is the funniest guy. His Mr. Malik character on Mr. D. is a favourite. Click on the link below to see this beefcake in action.
Luke from the Edge 102.1
Luke is a self-professed music lover and admirer of a nifty dance move. ‘I’m usually hangin’ at a bunch of concerts around the city and I once spent WAY too much time learning the dance moves to “Hotline Bling”’
The Queen Bee at Steam Whistle, Nancy keeps the good beer folks making that sweet nectar for all of us to enjoy. We are thrilled to welcome Nancy back for her 3rd year of judging at the Toronto Championships!
You are the sweetest Nancy.
and lastly but not least… Carlos ‘Hanzel the Manzel’ Mengual – the 2015 Toronto Champion and 2015 National Vice-Champion. He’ll be choosing his successor. Which might be awkward because he will be competing against that person come nationals. Here was his performance at last year’s event.
NATALIE ‘SWEET DEE’ SCOTT Becomes Saskatchewan’s First Air Guitar Champion!
It started with a vision of bringing something fun and irreverent to a town that had all the pieces of the rock and roll puzzle. Saskatoon is increasingly known for its arts, music, and creative community. The man with the plan. Mike Erman, purveyor of Glitch Gifts, assembled a team of businesses and performers to bring the idea of Air Guitar Saskatchewan to life. Special thanks to Glitch Gifts, 9 Mile Legacy Brewery, Better Off Duds, Ideas Inc., Smokes Poutinerie, Panago Pizza, Rock 102 and Banger Bingo.
The following is a photo bomb of all the nutty awesomeness that went down in Toon town on May 14th, 2016. The day the Air Guitar circus came to town. Thanks to photographer Bob Holtsman, we have vivid images of the 1st ever ‘official’ Air Guitar Saskatchewan Champioinships. Enjoy…
Banger Bingo, from Medicine Hat, Alberta kicked off the party, getting the audience involved with inflatable guitars and lost of BINGO fun.
It was a festival atmosphere, with beer tents, poutine trucks, and kicking sound system… we can’t thank our audience enough for supporting the event!
The event was run in support of Creative Kids Saskatchewan, a wonderful charity that helps kids gain access to the funds and the opportunities to immerse themselves in the arts – be it music, drama, or fine arts. For anyone who ever wanted desperately to participate in music or theatre but couldn’t afford the instruments or instruction, Creative Kids makes benefitting from arts education a possibility. Over $800 was raised for the charity!!
Mike Erman had a cool trophy put together for the winner. That will look good next to some emmys and oscars.
The first performance of the night was Morgan ‘Master Ugway’ Heise who boldly went where many have and few survived… he braved Van Halen’s Eruption. The lava flowed.
Chris ‘SINISTER’ Simister dropped some Goatwhore. Apocalyptic Havoc ensued.
Then Brennan ‘Major Party’ Risling marched in and ordered a Code Red.
Edward ‘Crazy Eddy’ Smith was on fire with Metallica’s ‘Trapped Under Ice’.
Natalie ‘Sweet Dee’ Scott channeled the spirit of Ambrose Bierce and schooled the audience with her reading of ‘The Devil’s Dictionary’ and her lights out performance of Van Halen’s ‘Hot for Teacher’.
Ying ‘BooBoo Kitty’ Tan turned a few heads with her acrobatic leopard printed performance of Avril Lavigne’s ‘Hello Kitty’.
There was Shaky Wilson doing Shaky Wilson. Shaking appropriately.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner showed us that Air knows no bounds and Air Guitarists can fly high, especially with ladders.
Jeff ‘Sid Dica’ Catagas closed out the performance round with a killer Ace Freely track – New York Groove.
The Judges – Xerxes Praetorius Horde – New Jacobin Club, Zelda Tremeer – Belladonnas & The Temps, Nicola Tabb – Better Off Duds, Peter MorningWood – Menagerie Burlesque Company and Christie McCulloch – Creative Kids.
Next came the Brave Souls Round… this is when people from the audience can choose from a number of pre-cut tracks and enter on the spot for their chance to make it through to the compulsory round. Thanks to the folks at Better Off Duds, there were instant rock star costumes available to help the newcomers get into the act.
Before anyone tried this out… Cat Friday from Red Deer Alberta and part of the Banger Bingo team rocked a demo for everyone to Whitney Houston… which makes perfect sense.
The Bearded Wonder came out of nowhere, thrilled the crowd and the judges and landed himself in the Compulsory Round.
The red sequinned jacket found a wearer, oddly enough her stage name was ‘BLUE’. I suppose you’ll have to guess why she’s called that.
Sandra rocked the fringe – she called herself Sandy Beaches… likely dreaming up plans for her next vacation.
This is probably our favourite picture… how serene that look on her face is. Jennifer ‘Miss Minx’ lived the ‘don’t think, just rock’ philosophy of Air Guitar.
Wild Card Hank dropped and prayed to the rock gods.
Thus ended the Brave Souls Round.
After all the scores were tallied the top 5 moved on to the Compulsory Round where all the top scoring Air Guitarists would rock out to the same song. The song was Shook Me All Night Long by AC DC. Seemed like a great time to eat some poutine from Smokes.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner made a return and showed us just how to Chester fry some finger licking guitar licks.
Major Party called in reinforcements and went ballistic to close out tied for 2nd place.
The Bearded Wonder completed the magic circle he started in the Brave Souls and also tied for second place!
In the end it was the sheer charisma and bad-assery of Natalie ‘Sweet Dee’ Scott that brought the Judges to pull out the big scores. She held her solid standing from the first round and came away with the Big Prize! She is Saskatchewan’s first ever official Air Guitar Champion!
And to top it off the gang joined together and rocked Neil Young’s Keep On Rocking In the Free World to celebrate the world peace and joy that was created that night!
And let’s not forget Malick – who closed out the night with their premium sound.
Huge thanks to everyone. Do it again next year. Or… make the trip with Natalie to Toronto for the Canadian National Championships on July 16th at the MOD cLub.
How much fun can you have pretending to be a rock star? You’ll have to make a stop at the Saskatoon Farmers Market Saturday night to see it all go down. The weird and wonderful starts at 6pm with Banger Bingo, followed closely around 7pm by the PERFORMANCE ROUND of the first ever official Saskatchewan Air Guitar Championships.
Yep. people of all shapes and sizes, walks of life, levels of sanity, will transform themselves before your very eyes with 1-min performances that will melt your face and leave you smiling from ear to ear. Heck, you might even get inspired yourself and decide to join in on the fun. For you, we have the BRAVE SOULS ROUND. It’s like Air Guitar Karaoke. Choose from a list of 30 or so, pre-cut tracks. Throw on some random costume or adornment provided by Better Off Duds, come up with a stage name and show the judges what you’ve got. The 2014 Canadian Air Guitar Champ – Lee ‘Brymtime’ Brymer was a Brave Soul. He went on to place 5th in the world!
Here are a few of the local treasures that will be taking the stage Saturday night:
Meet Ying ‘BooBoo Kitty’ Tan, first time air guitar competitor. BooBoo Kitty is the co-owner of Saskatoons favourite raw chocolate shop, Those Girls at the Market, and is also a nerdy college student. She is a lover of Hello Kitty, and loves to pretend she is a kitten…. or sometimes a ninja… she is never seen without her number one fan, her sister Julianna Tan.
She is originally a drummer. “I find air guitar actually quite challenging, it’s a whole new game. I have trouble holding the air guitar while concentrating on moving the rest of my body. You need good proprioception (look it up) and be able to multitask.”
BooBoo Kitty loves classic rock, with Led Zeppelin being her all time favourite, but for this show… “I wanted to play a song that was fun, flirty, and that expresses my inner wild kitten.”
As she said during her Global TV news interview, “If my life were a novel, this would be a wonderful chapter to add to my life”
Meet Dustin ‘Winner Winner Chicken Dinner’ Davidson. The KFC (King Fricken Chicken) of the AGC (Air Guitar Canada).
In a world where chickens are taken for granted, served with a smile, and sold piece by piece, one chicken is stepping up to the plate. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner had enough, he grabbed life by the wing and entered a championship competition to become the world’s best Air Guitarist. You will see him Saturday as he ‘flies’ the coupe, and he will Chester-fry your finger licking guitar riffing!
We can’t wait to see WWCD peck his Air Guitar to the metal tune of Old MacDonald. If that’s what he’s doing… which he is not. WWCD don’t cluck that way.
Other notable performers that will take the stage Saturday are: Jade ‘Jaded’ Rusling, Nathalie ‘Sweet Dee’ Scott, Morgan ‘Master Ugway’ Heise, Bryn ‘Hot Cocks’ Giroux, Vladamir ‘ Vlad The Diviner’ Yatsina, Edward ‘TBA’ Smith and Chris ‘SINISTER’ Simister.
There will be an all-girl Rush air band called CRUSH.
Then MALICK will take the stage in the later evening to close the party.
Entry is free but we sincerely hope you will take the opportunity to make a donation to CREATIVE KIDS of Saskatoon – the primary beneficiary of the event.
This event is brought to the great province of Saskatchewan by Mike Erman of GLITCH GIFTS and NOVELTIES, the brew peeps at 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, the swag shop slingers at BETTER OFF DUDS, the purveyors of epic pizza at PANAGO PIZZA, the poutine kings of SMOKES POUTINERIE, sweet radio rebels at ROCK 102, the incubators at IDEAS inc. and lastly the banging beat buddies from BANGER BINGO.
Get there. Have fun. Do good in the name of Creative Kids and enjoy the wacky that comes from jamming out your favourite rock/metal/pop/flamenco/alternative/indie/classical tune with nothing but air.
